1961-68
Edwin Singer and the Bayfront Arts and Sciences Park

Edwin Singer is best remembered for bringing the arts to Corpus Christi. A connoisseur of contemporary art, he is best remembered for almost single-handedly establishing the Art Museum of South Texas. In 1961, the Arts Council proposed a bayfront park as part of a much-needed project to house arts and cultural facilities together. After considerable work, Singer proposed to buy two blocks of land if the city would buy the other three. From 1965 through 1968, lawsuits kept the project from progressing until finally, in 1968, the Bayfront Arts & Sciences Park – where the Museum of Science and History, the South Texas Institute for the Arts, the Watergardens, and the Harbor Playhouse sit –
became a reality.
