As a leader in Mexican American affairs, physician and civil rights leader Jose Antonio Garcia held many positions that influenced education and civil rights. He was the first Mexican American elected to the Board of Trustees of Corpus Christi Independent School District in 1940, and as the first Mexican American on the Board of Regents of Del Mar College (which he helped establish), Garcia was instrumental in the desegregation of blacks. As a civil rights activist, Dr. Garcia was president of LULAC in 1943, and a board member of the Texas chapter of the Civil Liberties League.
