Mary and Howard E. Butt

Mary and Howard E. Butt turned H.E.B. Grocery, a small grocery store in Kerrville, TX into a corporate conglomerate. Moving to Corpus Christi in 1940, the Butts immediately began to share their resources with the community. Mary was influential in establishing the YWCA, the Hearth, the Nueces County Home for the Aged, the Nueces County Tuberculosis Hospital, the local American Cancer Society, and the Mary Bethune Day Nursery and helped establish a Juvenile Center for troubled youth. The Butts also built a mental health and mental retardation hospital and financed the University of Corpus Christi by paying the salaries of many of the University's staff during its time of financial trouble.
