Bernice Leonard and the Mary Mcleod
Bethune Day Nursery

One year after Bernice Leonard and her husband moved to Corpus Christi, she was inspired to establish the city's first licensed day care center to take care of many of the children she saw left unsupervised in public housing. Established primarily to serve children from low-income families, the Mary McLeod Bethune Day Nursery was started in 1942 in a home bought by philanthropist Mary Butt and four other families. Leonard nurtured and managed the center until her partial retirement in 1986. The center had grown from 10 to 170 students.
