1929
Ben Garza and the Founding of LULAC

Dedicated to fighting the individual and collective battles for the rights of Mexican-Americans and bringing them a richer and more representative life, local businessman Ben Garza was recognized statewide as an able and effective leader. He made several attempts to unify various existing Mexican American organizations and was finally successful on February 17, 1929 when the United League of American Citizens (LULAC) was established. Voted first president of LULAC, Garza argued against Mexican immigration restrictions before the United State House and established local councils throughout the state. After his death, the City Council dedicated the Ben Garza Park in his name.
