John Nance Garner and Opening Day of Port Corpus Christi

"Cactus Jack" Garner, who would become Speaker of the House and later Franklin D. Roosevelt's vice president, was very influential in the realization of Port Corpus Christi. As a Democratic Congressman representing the Corpus Christi area, Garner helped convince the number two man in the Corps of Engineers to break with policy and support Corpus Christi's effort. Port opening day was September 14, 1926 and was one of the largest celebrations in Corpus Christi history. Garner was also a major backer of the Intracoastal Canal, and was instrumental in the securing of Corpus Christi's first federal court and courthouse.
