1883
Eli Merriman and the Founding of the Caller Publishing

Three years after the arrival of horse-drawn streetcars in Corpus Christi and two years after the Tex-Mex Railroad was completed, journalist Eli T. Merriman founded the Caller Publishing Co. Merriman established the Corpus Christi Free Press with William Maltby in 1876. He sold the business in 1883, taking a stake in the Corpus Christi Caller Times and serving as publisher for 20 years before selling to Henrietta King in 1911. A major influence in many bayfront improvement projects, he was a tireless promoter of the city, using the newspaper to push for a deepwater port.
