1875
Entrepreneur Uriah Lott and the Construction of the
Tex-Mex Railroad

The arrival of Entrepreneur, Uriah Lott, changed Corpus Christi forever. Lott's development of railroads had perhaps more impact on South Texas towns than any other single individual. With the backing of Richard King and Mifflin Kenedy, Lott's Tex-Mex Railroad began construction in 1875 amid rancorous debate concerning costs, bond issues, land acquisition, and the loss of ox-cart business. He went on to play a leading role in building the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway as well as the St. Louis, Brownsville and Mexico Railway. Lott was also instrumental in the first dredging attempts in Corpus Christi Bay.
