1852
A Newly Incorporated Corpus Christi Elects its First Mayor, Benjamin Franklin Neal

Incorporated in 1852, Corpus Christi selected Benjamin Franklin Neal, a judge, newsman and Confederate soldier, as the city's first mayor. Building upon his experience as a publisher of several Texas newspapers, Neal moved to Corpus Christi in 1846 and founded the Nueces Valley newspaper. When the Civil War began, Neal organized and financed an artillery unit called “Neal's Battery” to defend the city against Union ships. He also served as a judge during and after the War and actively supported efforts to secure legislation and financial support for a deepwater port and
railroad line.
