1838
Colonel Henry Lawrence Kinney, Founder of Corpus Christi

Colonel Henry Lawrence Kinney established the first trading post in 1838, opening the way for settlement. Within four years, Kinney's Trading Post had captured virtually all the Mexican trade. During the Mexican War, Kinney influenced the army to set up General Zachary Taylor's encampment close to the Post, marking the first impetus in the expansion of Corpus Christi and spurring the local economy. During the California Gold Rush, he established freight lines and advertised Corpus Christi as the quickest route to riches, later expanding his promotion of the city internationally as the “Naples of the Gulf”.
