Padre Nicolas Balli and the First European Settlement

The first European settlement on Padre Island was established around 1804, when missionary and explorer Padre Jose Nicolas Balli founded a ranch. Born around 1770 to a wealthy family in what is now Mexico, Balli was an original grantee of over a million acres of the Texas coastal island named Padre Island in his honor by the Government of Mexico.
